Manoa Elementary School is situated in the beautiful, majestic, and historic Manoa Valley. The lush school campus reflects the serenity and ambiance of the surrounding environment. The geographic location is a highly desirable residential area with many families establishing strong roots and culturaidentitiesty. The children of families often return to Manoa to continue their family heritage.

Parents and community members are an integral part of Manoa School, lending tremendous support and resources to further assist our teachers and students. We have an active APT (Association of Parents and Teachers) and SCC (School Community Council). The outpouring of generosity is truly outstanding and well appreciated.

History

Manoa School was established as one of the first English-speaking schools in Hawaii. Eighteen students attended when the school was opened on October 11, 1854. Located in majestic and historic Manoa Valley, the school today has grades Kindergarten to fifth. It is one of the two valley schools that are part of the Roosevelt Complex. The word "Manoa" is a contraction of "Moanoanoa" and means thick or solid, deep as a substance having breadth and depth, like the valley itself.

Over the past five years, the enrollment at Manoa Elementary School has averaged about 550. While about 20 percent of the students live outside our geographical area, most have family roots in the valley. Our students come from varied socioeconomic statuses, a multi-ethnic community, diverse family types, and residences of single-family dwellings.

Philosophy

Our aim at Manoa School is to produce well-rounded personalities capable of taking their places in our democratic society as worthwhile citizens to achieve our goals, we believe the following:

Good discipline is of utmost importance. Learning takes place in a well-organized classroom. Lessons must be well planned by the teacher, with active learning that is interesting to each student.
Each student is an individual differing from every other intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically.
Continued cooperation, articulation, and coordination must be practiced by all school communities, including teachers, parents, administration, support staff, students, and the community.
