Congratulations to Hayden Noland from room 28! He is the 2nd grade winner for the Nuuanu, Kalihi and Manoa Districts in the 27th Annual Children's Painting Contest. Hayden's painting as well as the other winners will be exhibited at the Mokichi Okada Association exhibition at the Honolulu Museum of Art from May 30 to June 6, 2015.
On May 6th, David, with the help of the Manoa Boy Scouts, built and erected 4 planter boxes in the 4th grade aisle, weeded the 3rd grade rain garden, and sorted out our vermicomposting bin. We appreciate their contribution to beautifying our school campus! Thank you to David Hamada for completing his Eagle Scout project at Manoa School!

A beautiful Ulu tree has been planted at Manoa School. Uncle Bruce, Aunty Kehau, Aunty Helen, Kumu Kaulu, and Kumu Kahalei brought two trees to our school. They wanted to share what a great plant the Ulu is and to increase the number of Ulu trees in Manoa Valley. This is because the Ulu tree can be used for many things. The fruit and seeds can be eaten and are both tasty and nutritious. The tree can also be used for construction materials, medicine, fabric, glue, insect repellent, animal feed, and much more. Students chanted, "E Ulu, E Ola!", wishing the Ulu tree to grow strong. Visit our Ulu tree; it's located just outside of the health room. You can learn more about the Ulu at www.breadfruit.org, and www.breadfruit.info.
Congratulations to Dallas Kuba for coming in 1st Place (4th-5th grade) in the Hawaii: Next 50 Years Essay Contest. The Hawaii: Next 50 Contest was inspired by former Governor George Ariyoshi's book, Hawaii: The Past Fifty Years, The Next Fifty Years, which provided a retrospective look into our islands' history as a state and prompts the next generation to think about what roads we can take to keep Hawaii moving forward in the next century. Dallas attended an awards ceremony and met Governor Ariyoshi at the State Capitol on Friday, March 20, 2015.
